Looking fit and trim, the Toxic singer scooped three gongs for Best Video, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video in front of a global audience of millions. Just a year after her public breakdown, 26-year-old Britney was thanking “God first and foremost for blessing me like this.”

She also gave a heartfelt thanks to her legions of fans for standing by her, adding: “This means a lot. Thank you so much. Thank you all for the love.” However the star offered no further insight into her mental state and refused to speak to reporters later. She also disappointed fans who expected her to sing. Britney shot to fame 10 years ago aged 16, when she appeared on TV screens pouting and twirling in a schoolgirl’s uniform in the video for her hit Baby One More Time.

She was catapulted to world stardom and raked in millions of dollars - but the fame was to cost her heavily. After 83 million record sales, two marriages, two divorces, two children, a lost custody battle and reported drug abuse, the young star went into melt-down.
